Cryptozoology, in both its speculative and empirical aspects, is to SteamPunk what...I don't know, watching Planet Earth is to folks with Blu-Ray players and HD TVs?

now I want to make a beastary..especially becuase it would be of absolutly no use to me.

Bestiaries are brilliant! And that would be so much fun, not only for you, but for many people...And I'm sure if you sold copies of your bestiary along with your albums at shows and such, you'd get a lot of interested buyers!

(As a medievalist, and someone who is affiliated with the newly-emergent academic field of "monster studies," this suggestion of yours, of course, appeals to be greatly in so many ways...)

Now now. "Use" is a relative term...
10th-Nov-2008 04:29 am (UTC)
"use" being defined as somthing I do with a productive purpose.

Too much of what I do is part of a larger plan. I used to have an aquarium, souly bevuade it was somthing I could do to clear my mind. It turned out I would lie awake at night worried my critters were eating each other (which was very likly in my illreasearched biospere). The last thing I need us a stressful hobby.

Drawing would not be this, since I proceed knowing I am no where near as good as my friends who draw.

Sir, I think it's a quite lovely drawing...I can't draw at all. I'm more of a wordsmith myself. By why not draw for your own entertainment, not because you think you're skills are or aren't up to par with anybody else? Case in point: I think my writing stinks, but I do it anyway! Besides, I'm quite fond of your snurtle. If you want to let him go to a good home, I'm always here...

I love it! But then again, I'm a snail protector, so I'm probably biased.

I just wanted to pop in here and say to [info]crowgrl13 that I effin love Snails! They're my second favorite animal ^.^
10th-Nov-2008 06:34 pm (UTC)
Just so you know, I am the Queen Protector of Snails! I move them off of pathways and out of driveways and stuff. Yeah, I'm a big doofus...they're just so cute and helpless. Snails need love too y'know...
10th-Nov-2008 04:05 am (UTC)
that is totally wicked! You're a Renaissance man!

How large is it? And could it be filled with helium? If so, you could fit it with a gondola much like the brandy kit beneath a St. Bernard's chin. Imagine the bombing runs! I just wouldn't advise landing in any salt flats.

Nice! Soon to be featured in Air? :)
10th-Nov-2008 06:32 am (UTC)
This reminds me of the "Goblins" book Brian Froud did a few years ago.

Also, I'd love to see a bestiary. Mind if others chip in some sketches?
10th-Nov-2008 07:48 am (UTC)
ah yes the Dinosnailchicken, very common I believe in the certain parts of madagascar.....
10th-Nov-2008 12:37 pm (UTC)
but it's not a pangolin! :D
10th-Nov-2008 04:20 pm (UTC)
YES! I'm not the only who makes up random crap!
But yours is much better then my harpsiconcertinachord. And I know just how to build it, too!
10th-Nov-2008 05:36 pm (UTC)
Lemme see!
11th-Nov-2008 03:17 am (UTC)
I deeply apologize, but there is nothing to see. It is simply a thought, though drawings may ensue.
The idea is a concertina or accordion with only the bass buttons. The other side having keys like a piano accordion with 'toy harpsichord' strings. So you're pulling a simple sound out of the bass side of the concertina while plucking a lovely Victorian tune from the harpsichord side.

You draw wonderfully! I would very much like to see more drawings and beasties =D
11th-Nov-2008 08:52 am (UTC)
Not only is it cute, but it's better drawn than a LOT of stuff my fellow art majors do.
24th-Nov-2008 08:37 am (UTC)
That is adorable! I think you aren't giving yourself enough credit. Please tell me that you guys are going to make another pin out of this!

If you ever want other artist input into your beastiary I'd love to contribute.
You could have a list of animal names that have little or no description and leave it to the individual to figure them.
And what a lovely tooled leather cover it would want to finish it.

Beastiaries give so much space to invent. Most of the old ones are two thirds symbology or word of mouth. Its just that a person wrote it down and attempted to illustrate it. Like horse hair left in a bucket over night under a full moon was meant to turn into eels.
The remnant of magic and superstition that clings despite the industrial revolution is one of the things that makes the victorian era so intriguing.

I was a part of a Beastiary portfolio based on actual historic examples that never got off the ground.
