This little lab mix has 5 days left to live
10th-Jan-2011 05:22 pm
This little lab mix has 5 days left to live. Her owners couldn't take her when they moved. I wonder if they could have taken the time if they saw her now. She is not a very desirable breed apparently. Besides the shelter being too full, that is the reason she'll die before many others. She is sweet, quiet, housebroken, spayed, utd on shots, and just wants to get out of this sterile, scary cell and go home with someone that will love her as much as she'll love them. Could you love her forever? If the drive is too long for you, please look in the crowded shelters in your area.

Frankly, it disgusts me that people think they have the right and the need to kill animals for no reason like this. If you have a choice between being homless for a while, or being killed, wouldn't you chose homless?

- Robert

Rescue this dog (forever), and I will give you one free ANYTHING from the Abney Park store. ANYTHING. (please note: if you havn't been to the store in a while, we got cool shit.)

I want to adopt this girl so bad! I would do so in a heartbeat, even living all the way here in upstate New York if only I didn't live in such a tiny apartment! She is such a beautiful dog...

It is an amazing thing you are doing by showing this to other people. Keep it up, you might just be able to save this girl's life.

If my landlord allowed dogs, I'd totally adopt her. Then again, my landlord not allowing dogs might be why I never got one. I even spent the extra time to find an apartment that would allow me to keep all three of my cats(all three rescued, one from abandoment as a 3 week old kitten, one from the spca, and one from the upstairs neighbors being evicted and taking everything but their cat).

Huzzah!

Well said sir, well said.

Alas I'm too far away to rescue this one and my place is too small to rescue one locally... <sigh>

That's awful!
If I were up there, I would take her. UGH. distance.
10th-Jan-2009 03:41 am (UTC)
I wish I knew someone that could. I would except I live across the country.

How is a black Labrador a non-desirable breed, exactly? All the ones I've met have been great family pets.

I hope she finds someone.
10th-Jan-2009 05:00 am (UTC)
tis an unfortunate fact that black dogs are VERY rarely adopted :<

I highly suggest EVERYONE read this story.. but have tissues ready

who only owns rescued animals and is sickened by the pathetic stories some people use when they give them up

If we didn't live in Atlanta we would so do it. I don't even now anyone near enough to pass the message to. This sucks.
10th-Jan-2009 04:12 am (UTC)
Passing the info to the WA people I know to help pass the word around. Here's hoping she gets a home.

10th-Jan-2009 04:15 am (UTC)
Oh, and for anyone for whom distance is an issue, I direct you to [info]driveforlife. I'm not sure what could be arranged within the timeframe, but I figure it's worth a shot.

My fiancée volunteered for an animal transport back in May last year, and helped an Aussie Cattle Dog get from North Carolina to Minnesota.

iawtc. There are animal transports done by volunteers every weekend of the year, and some weekdays as well. Even if you aren't looking to adopt, they sure could use some volunteers to help save these animals.

Looks like she got pulled into a foster home. :)

Where did you get the original info?
10th-Jan-2009 08:06 am (UTC)
hi she is actually no longer in her forster home, I contacted the shelter before I posted about her. in my own journal, she still needs our help.

I would give up my sulky teenager before I'd give up my dog.

PS.

If you would really like to understand the history of animal shelters in the US and how the animal welfare movement went so wrong as to have this mentality, I suggest reading _Redemption_ by Nathan J. Winograd.

You should. It's a book that will rock your world, and make you hope for a better tomorrow.

The best dog I ever had was a black lab mix. She was friendly, smart, and loved everyone. If I didn't have two cats in a tiny apartment, I'd find a way to bring her to Sacramento.

At least she's out of the shelter and into foster care. Hopefully someone will be able to give her the home she deserves.
10th-Jan-2009 05:54 am (UTC)
There is a reason I like most animals more than most people. Her owners are the reason.
But sometimes people are good too. People like you guys who actually give a crap to try and help.
10th-Jan-2009 05:58 am (UTC)
I'd rescue every animal who was in danger of being euthanised if I could. The poor girl looks so sweet, I wish I could adopt her.

I'm gonna go throw this ad around the internet.

Tis a noble gesture you make Robert... but in reality.. less than a drop in an ocean :< You may very well save Valeria.. and she DESERVES to be saved.. but then, so do the thousands of other animals surrendered every day all over the world ... whether by pathetic lame imitations of humans.. or by genuine distraught owners.

If you REALLY want to make a difference.... put a link on your page to humane societies across America and the world.. perhaps your generous offer could be repeated once a year. Every fan who can provide proof of adopting a neutered, surrendered pet from a shelter could go into a draw for an Abney Park goodie??

All the people who say "I really would do this, but its too far/she's too big/can't have dogs" PROVE it.. go to your local shelter and find a pet you can have.. I can guarantee that you will find a loving, affectionate animal on death row who is just as deserving as the beautiful Valeria.

To those who are going to throw virtual molotovs at me because they think this post is insensitive... don't bother.. there is nothing you can say that I haven't heard. I have worked in animal rescue, and I have heard every pathetic excuse there is for surrendering an animal.. and I have shovelled bodies into incinerators, and I have held puppies and kittens as they died because other people are irresponsible about neutering pets. Walk a mile in those hard to wear boots before you put fingers to keyboard .

if every puts a drop in the bucket, the bucket will fill. There is my drop, actually one of many.

Ask yourself, "am I filling the bucket, or talking people out of helping"?

I'm more likly to start a website condeming in-humaine societies. There is no way I''d support them...except for the few (and growing) number of no-kill shelters.

I do however contribute to Sea Shepard.

Aw.

We have a black dog ( corgi rottie cross) that was a rescue. Life without her would not be so much fun. When we picked her up, there was a moment of "how many of these dogs can we fit in the car" from the foster dog home. Seriously. I'd take a hatchback of hounds if I could. ( alas, we have one, and that's all we can for now.)

And thanks sir, for your efforts. It might be a drop in the bucket, but something, is better than nothing.

10th-Jan-2009 07:37 am (UTC)
Yes, we have a house full of rescues. Are dog we actually got WITH parvo: we new she'd only live if she had owners willing to spend the money to save her life. Ironically, the $800 vet bill that kept her alive is still less then somepeople spend at the breeders.

"Frankly, it disgusts me that people think they have the right and the need to kill animals for no reason like this. If you have a choice between being homless for a while, or being killed, wouldn't you chose homless?"

I particularly agree with this. . . especially given the fact that she's neutered. I always thought the putative justification for euthanasia was that animals, once re-released into the urban wilds, would breed and create new animals. But if she's been neutered, there's no way. . . I don't get it. She's healthy, she's a being, a creature worthy of respect and love, so WTF?
14th-Jan-2009 08:52 pm (UTC)
No. The justification for euthanasia is that 'releasing' a dog into the urban wilds is *not* a humane act.

P.S. I hope I'll be able to make it to your show in San Francisco. Big fan here. . . not sure how the scheduling will work out, but thrilled to see you guys in the Bay Area again.
10th-Jan-2009 07:18 am (UTC)
Hrm. Can anyone get her to Boise? If so, I'd take her. I adore my rescue corgis.
10th-Jan-2009 08:10 am (UTC)
D'awwwww. She's adorable.

If we didn't have a developing aggression problem with our Tosa, I'd give this one a shot. We've been talking about rescuing a dog to keep our current pup company, but that's gonna have to be put on hold for the forseeable future

P.S. - fashion show plans coming nicely. YAY

I don't understand how anyone can have an animal in their home and then just drop it off without a care to his or her fate. When I take an animal into my home, that animal is a member of the family, and one that is completely dependent upon me for all of its health, happiness, and well-being. That means it is my responsibility, and my joy, to make sure that animal has everything it needs, even if I have to do without.

At this point in my life, I don't have the consistent time to be able to give a dog all the love and attention it would want and deserve, but someday I look forward to rescuing one. I do have two cats, though, and both were rescues. One came from the local SPCA shelter. The other looked at me with giant blue eyes from a rescue organization cage at a pet store, and my heart just melted.

Pets are not possessions. They are our companions, our friends, our brothers, our sisters. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make sure this lovely lady has another chance at life.
10th-Jan-2009 01:43 pm (UTC)
Robert, you're just lovely.

Last time I got a dog from a shelter I was with my mother. She broke down and cried her heart out when she saw all the animals needing homes. We wanted to save them all.

xx
